In the previous scene, Utena was startled to see Touga, her former boyfriend, watching several people fencing. She ran to find him, meeting him in the school's rose garden. There, he gave her a rose and told her the rose signet had led him to the school. The next day, Utena visited the rose garden again...
Utena bends down to take a closer look at the roses. She notices one rose that's different from the rest. It hasn't bloomed yet, and unlike the others, it's white, not red. "A white rose," she says in amazement.
As she watches the white rose, it starts to spin around, glowing with white light as the petals grow fuller. In a mere manner of seconds, the white rose blooms, shining with an other-worldly light, filling the rose garden with its almost-eerie glow.
The rose bends over - no longer white but a shining pink, and Utena puts her hand underneath it. Something round, white, and shining drops from the rose into her palms, like a drop of water.
In her hand, Utena's eyes widen as she realizes the rose has given her her own rose signet. "What... is this?" she asks herself, stunned beyond words.
