Enter Utena, looking out the window, and Wakaba, who introduces herself and takes Utena on a tour of the campus. * The Shadow girls introduce themselves and talk on their radio show. * Enter Juri and Miki, dueling in front of a crowd of people to the music, "Scarlet Tachi no Butou". Juri wins and says Miki is better off playing the piano; Wakaba tells Utena about the fencing club and the two. * Utena sees Touga lounging around in the building behind the area where the fencing club is. Utena is surprised and runs off to find him. * It starts to rain. Utena enters rose garden and finds Touga there waiting for her. Touga asks her about their promise to go to the planetarium but Utena says to forget about it. She says she's changed and wants to become a prince, so Touga gives her a rose for her "high ideals." Utena sees the rose signet on Touga's hand and thinks he's engaged. He tells her that the ring led him to the school. * The next day it's no longer raining and Utena returns to the rose garden. She sees a white rose and it gives her the rose signet to the music "Bara no Kokuin". Utena looks up and sees the dueling platform, then walks up there. * Enter Anthy, who asks if Utena is scared from such a high height. She then introduces herself and says this is her rose garden. She asks why Utena is there and Utena holds up the rose signet. Anthy's eyes widen and she reaches out to take it. * Enter Saionji, who says the dueling grounds are prohibited and asks what Utena is doing with the Rose Bride. He then notices that Utena has a rose signet and says it's okay, since they're both duelists. * Utena is confused so she asks Saionji what the rose signet is. Saionji says that whoever has one can duel for possession of the Rose Bride. Utena sees Saionji has a rose signet too. She has a flashback to Touga telling her about how the rose signet led him to the school, and she puts it on. The gate to the dueling platform closes. * The dueling song, "Duelist - Yomigaere!" begins to play in the background as Anthy puts a rose in the breast pockets of Saionji and Utena. She explains to Utena the winner of the duel is the one who knocks the rose from the other person. She notices Utena has no sword, so Utena takes the handle off of a broom. * Anthy realizes Utena doesn't understand what she's getting into and tries to stop the duel but the bells ring and Saionji takes that as the signal to begin, knocking Anthy aside. Utena asks how Saionji can hit his girlfriend like that and joins in the duel. * Saionji and Utena duel; Utena demands to know what is going on so Saionji tells her stuff about the Rose Bride being a prize and all that. His sword slices Utena's broomstick in half. * Utena shields the rose with her hand and Saionji realizes she's a woman. Utena says there's nothing wrong with being a woman, and gets ready to continue the duel, but Saionji knocks the rest of the broomstick out of her hands. He launches the final attack. * Anthy pushes Utena out of the way and says there can be no duel without a sword. She kisses Utena and turns into the Rose Bride. The Sword of Dios appears and Utena takes it, transforming into her dueling persona with long hair. She attacks and knocks Saionji's rose off. |
