* Merchandise *

Got money? Want more Utena movie stuff? Well, here's a listing of the Utena movie merchandise I have. I also have a list of other things I don't have but are listed in the back of the Program book.

* Artbooks * There are several Utena movie artbooks out there.

The one I have is the Newtype Illustrated Collection, published by Newtype/Kodansha. The ISBN is 4-04-853169-7 and costs about $40 US. It's softcover, a little over 100 pages and contains a gallery of images varying from poster/promo art to images of different scenes and backgrounds, a bunch of black and white character design pages, an analysis of the movie with images from certain scenes and bits of dialogue, several interviews with various people, and the entire script. I enjoy it immensly.

There is also an artbook with colorful and gorgeous manga-movie art by Chiho Saito. I don't have it but I've seen it several times. It's really, really, really oversized. The cover has a purple border and its hardback with a cardboard box it fits into. The ISBN is 4091996825.

There are several others out there but many of them are a combination of the Utena television series and Utena movie art. I have little other information on them, though. I believe one of them is called "Art of Utena".

A Program Book was sold at the theatres where the movie was showing (at least that's what I think happened.) They are limited and to my knowledge, relatively rare. Your best chance at getting one is to look on E-bay. I got mine at Mandarake in Torrance, and it cost me $20. The program book is hardback and about 50 pages long, in color and black and white.

* Music * There are 2 main CD's both produced by King Records.

Soundtrack #7 has an image of manga-style Utena her movie outfit and is kind of pinkish purple. It is KICA-467. This CD contains some of the choral songs to the movie, but they are different versions than the ones actually played in the movie. I don't know.. I don't have this CD, but I might plan on getting it in the near future..

Soundtrack #8 is also known as "Adolescence Rush" and is the official movie soundtrack. If you are lucky enough to get first press you get a really cool pink cardboard box to put it in. It is KICA-471 and the ISBN is 4-98003-232832. The CD has an image of Utena in her movie outfit on the front and Anthy in her movie outfit on the back. The Audio page has more information on this CD.

Both CD's cost around $32 because they are imports. I am aware that SonMay and EverAnime have released bootleg copies of it, but I don't endorse them. Besides, you don't get ubercool pink boxes with cheap bootlegged copies, do you?

* Other things * I have no clue how to categorize this stuff, so here's a big list. I got this info from the back of the program book, mostly.

Telephone cards - they cost from 1000 to 1500 yen ($10 to $15) and feature various images from the movie. There are also metallic ones that have an image of Utena or Anthy, a pair costs 3000 yen or about $30.

Chu Chu watch - It's a wristwatch. Chuchu provides a metal round frame, and on the face of the watch are letters spelling out Utena (in pink.) It costs 5040 yen (about $50.)

Strap - I think this is a cell phone strap, with a pink rose seal on the end. It costs 1260 yen, or around $13.

Shitajiki - pencil boards! Again with various images from the movie, and cost 315 yen (about $3).

Stainless bookmarker - I have this and it's really pretty. It's a bookmark that has a silvery-metal scrollwork border, and in the center is an image of Utena and Anthy. It costs 840 yen, or around $9.

Fan - it's a round fan with a plastic handle, presumably, and has an image of Utena on it. Cost - 367 yen, or around $4.

Pins - silvery metal pins of the rose signet. 840 yen, around $9.

Ring - the rose signet, in silver with a pink inlay around the rose itself. Size up to 12 (although I don't know what their smallest size would be, since I'd require a 4 and few companies actually mass produce size 4 rings...) 2520 yen or about $25.

Metallic Poster - A poster that's got prismatic/metallic background? I can't tell from the picture, but it's an image of all the main characters from the movie. 525 yen, or about $5.

Mirror - This actually looks pretty cool. It's a mirror with a rose border like the one that pops up in the television series a lot in those flashbacks. It costs 1050 yen, about $10.

E-Graphics Cards - postcards with pictures from the Utena movie. Check out the E-Cards Image Gallery for scans and more information on them.

Wallscroll - I saw this on sale at AnimeNation. It's a sideways one (meaning it's wider lengthwise than height) and has a picture of Utena on it.

Of course, now you're wondering where you can find these lovely things. Well, to tell you the truth, I'm not sure. You could try online stores like AnimeNation or AnimeCastle or something. You can try Ebay or Yahoo Auctions for some of the rarer or stranger ones.

If you live in the Los Angeles area, Animate USA (located on Melrose) carries a variety of Movic merchandise including the mirror, the cell phone strap, the fan, and the Chu-Chu watch. (I've seen them for myself at the shop, this is the real deal!) There is also Omochabox (across the street from Westside Pavilion), which sells the import DVD. Mandarake in Torrance may also have goods from time to time, as well as Anime Jungle in Little Tokyo. Outside of the LA area, you can always check out a local anime shop - who knows what they have? And if you ask nicely, you may even be able to special order certain items. You could bug a friend who lives in Japan to get it for you. Just keep your eyes open, I suppose. However, because most of these things are imports do be aware that the prices are likely to be rather high. Also beware of bootleg goods. Certain things like posters, wallscrolls, and CD's are easily pirated, so if you want the real thing, always check for such official things like copyright information (to Movic, King Records, etc.), check the quality (if it looks shoddy, it's probably bootlegged,) etc. And good luck!
