. . . data . guide to the stones. . .

This guide serves to catalog and explain the properties of all the stones mentioned in the series. It is divided into two classes: Major stones and Minor stones. I consider a stone "major" if its name is written on the cover of one of the books. If it is only mentioned in the text, then I consider it "minor". Many of the minor stones aren't even used, only named, so information on them is often sketchy, including the proper romanization of the names.

Stone information is given as: Name, Power, First Bearer (which denotes whom we first see with/using the stone) and First Appearance. Following that will be brief information in normal text, followed by spoiler text hidden because it is the same color as the background. To read this information, highlight the text. Some of the latter stones have information presented entirely as spoiler text; anything besides a mention would give away certain plot points.

This guide contains information for the entire series and will contain spoilers for the entire series.

major stones

Veszelyite

Power: Information (summons star/planet maps)

First Bearer: Yuki

First Apperance: Volume 1

More information:

Veszelyite is Yuki's primary stone, the one he uses most often. Although it only summons maps of stars and planets, this is extremely useful to Yuki and Sakura who use this information to try and find more stones.

Yuki was born with a fragment of Veszelyite in his hand, and because of this, was given the title "Monad" and named "Monad Data." Monad was the one who sealed all of the stones in the "Toll" stone tower on Paronia, and his stone was also Veszelyite. This is one of the few stones that never changes hands.

Opal

Power: Flight in the form of wings

First Bearer: Sakura

First Apperance: Volume 1

More information:

Opal is Sakura's primary stone, and is the one most associated with him. He uses it to transport himself and Yuki to whichever planet Yuki's Veszelyite says is next, making them a powerful search team. It has some secondary teleportational powers as well, although it is not pronounced as in Gold.

Sakura was born with a fragment of Opal in his hand, and because of this, he was also given the title "Monad" and named "Monad Maya." Sakura first discovers Opal's power when falling from a skyscraper, trying to save two young children who had also fallen off. Although Opal saved his life, it was much too late to save the children. Sakura uses Opal constantly as he's always on the move, and it, as well, is one of the few stones that never changes hands.

Topaz

Power: Telekinesis (ability to move objects remotely)

First Bearer: Sakura

First Apperance: Volume 1

More information:

Yuki and Sakura first discover Topaz residing in a large stone statue of a woman. When trying to extract it, Sakura jokes that you have to waken a sleeping beauty with a kiss, and kisses the statue's lips. Topaz suddenly activates (due to the proximity of Veszelyite and Opal and NOT the kiss) and chooses Sakura to be its bearer (much to Yuki's dismay.) Because it allows one to move objects without touching them, it's useful in attack and defense, although Sakura doesn't use it too often in either respect - only when he's really ticked off.

When Kiruva tries to awaken Sakura's memories of his past, he intones the incantation that is more often used to transfer stones - and unwittingly ends up taking Topaz in the process. This makes him and Sakura great enemies, and the enmity lasts for a long time. Kiruva only uses Topaz occasionally. Later, when Monad Data takes Muza's Variscite, Kiruva gives him Topaz so that Muza, one of the ten stone vessels, at least has one stone to use.

Spodume (Richia)

Power: Transformation (illusion?)

First Bearer: Richia

First Apperance: Volume 1

More information:

Although this stone is written as "Spodume" on the covers, it's always called "Richia" in the story, because Yuki and Sakura first discover it in hiding in a young girl. Richia and her father, Datoh, were clinging together for support after Richia's mother died. However, as Yuki and Sakura discover, Richia herself also died by drowning. Richia's pet tortoise, Toto, absorbed the stone while diving after her in the lake, and upon seeing Datoh's grief at the death of his daughter, used the stone's power to transform into the form of Richia. Toto slowly becomes unraveled, especially after Datoh's death, and relinquishes the stone, no longer needing its power. Sakura ends up with it, again to Yuki's dismay.

Spodume is only used by Sakura once, when his Monad Maya personality was beginning to surface. He returns to Paronia, and in order to trick Varnia and the rest of the Paronians, he uses the stone to transform into Monad Data in order to get to the Mirror of Veszelyite (not to be confused with Yuki's stone.) However, after smashing part of the mirror and cutting his hand, Sakura's personality resurfaces and his hold on the stone vanishes, leaving back in his normal form.

Spinel

Power: Telepathy/mind reading

First Bearer: Right

First Apperance: Volume 2

More information:

Right uses Spinel in two ways. As a performer, he summons shards of red Spinel to appear out of his body, drawing many crowds. However, its main power is in telepathy, and Right has become so dependant on using Spinel that he lost the use of his own voice.

Kiruva appears and in order to awaken Right's memories, he uses the incantation and takes Spinel, telling Right that he doesn't need its powers. Right, remembering his years as Elilas and his friendship with Kiruva, agrees, and slowly remembers how to use his voice again. (This action does not endear Kiruva to Sakura or Yuki, and only increases the enmity between him and Sakura.) Kiruva uses Spinel only occasionally, to communicate with others who are at a distance, or to read minds (although that may just be him being observant.) Later, he seems to have given Spinel to Rona, otherwise Rona, one of the ten stone vessels, wouldn't have had any.

Gold

Power: Teleportation

First Bearer: Kiruva

First Apperance: Volume 2

More information:

Gold is Kiruva's primary stone, and like Sakura's Opal it is useful in traveling. It offers teleportation and Kiruva can take others with him if he wants. He can also use Gold to teleport others to a different location, using this at one point to separate Yuki and Sakura so he can deal with them separately.

Gold is always associated with Kiruva, and is one of the few stones never to change bearers.

Seran

Power: Allure

First Bearer: Dariya

First Apperance: Volume 4

More information:

We first see Dariya using this stone in order to insinuate her way into Shuria's ranks, trying to get a closer look at Corundum. When she accidentally runs into Yuki, she also tries to use it on him, but to her shock, it doesn't work. She wonders if Yuki's connection to Sakura protected him, but later, when she tries to use Seran on Shuria, it also doesn't work. (Perhaps bearing one or more of the stones gives a person immunity.)

When Sakura, in his Monad Maya persona, tries to take Shuria's Corundum, Dariya prevents him because she says Corudum is hers. Sakura responds by taking Dariya's Seran, and although surprised, she begins to cry tears of happiness and lets him, thinking he has regained all of his memories. However, his Sakura persona quickly reasserts itself, and an embarassed Sakura tries to return Seran, but Dariya won't take it back. Without Seran, Dariya is a rather plain young woman instead of the beautiful lady. Sakura is never seen using Seran, although he does speculate on its uses.

Corundum

Power: Healing

First Bearer: Shuria

First Apperance: Volume 4

More information:

Shuria uses Corundum to heal people - for a price. His band collects payments from the public and gives them numbers. Every "Day of Sorrow" he chooses a few numbers and heals those selected people. This practice makes him and his band unbelievably wealthy, until Yuki, Sakura, and Dariya appear, all with sights on the stone.

Shuria used to be Shuriguno, part of a band of thieves. One day he found a man dying by the waterside. It was Foll, one of the ten stone vessels. Foll gave Corundum to Shuriguno and a locket with an image of a young girl, telling him to find his "beloved Dariya" and to give her Corundum. When Dariya appears in front of Shuria, he can't believe she's the same as the girl in the locket, but after Sakura takes Seran, she reverts to her former self, and he knows she is the Dariya Foll was talking about. He gives her Corundum and then takes his band and leaves. Dariya, better at using the stone's power, uses it to heal an enormous amount of people on the planet before leaving to search for others. Later, when Sakura is having issues with accepting Surssasite - he would regain his memories of the past, but loose all his memories of being Sakura, something he cannot accept - Dariya takes matters into her own hands. She gives Sakura her Corundum, and this allows Sakura to remember being Monad Maya, but he tells her "half of me is still Sakura." Maya uses the stone occasionally to heal others, but it's not as versatile as many of the others.
