A little page devoted to Mitsukake

Contains Spoilers

You just can't have a page devoted to Tama-Neko without having at least something about Mitsukake (or if you go by his regular name, Myo Juan.) The two go together like Miaka and food. After all, Mitsukake's shoulder is Tama-Neko's favorite place to sit. Although it's unknown how the two happened to meet, because Mitsukake was a veternarian at one point in time, and because in the manga, Tama-Neko first appears with a bandage around his middle, it's plausible to think that Mitsukake rescued the cat and healed him. (Hence my fic, "Healer".) His symbol is 'rare cart' found on the palm of his left hand, and his power is healing (although for a while, he can only exercise his power once a day.) His healing power is extraordinay - he heals life-threatening wounds on several occasions, but often requires rest afterwards.

The first thing that strikes people about Mitsukake (aside from the startling change from scruffy hermit to bishounen hero) is how quiet he is. He is probably most opposite of Tasuki. He is kind and compassionate (hence the healing of animals when he had given up being a healer of people) and doesn't say very much. He isn't quick to act - he gives the impression of thinking and planning things out, whereas Tasuki leaps straight into the fray and worries about consequences later.

His compassion shows in his dealing with Shouka. After a flood had killed their families, they had only each other to hold on to. They loved each other dearly, but one day Mitsukake left to help a different village. When he returned, Shouka had died from disease, and his healing powers could not bring back the dead. After this shattering experience, Mitsukake became a hermit and moves to the outstretches of the city, refusing to heal people, yet still making medicines and helping animals (one of which is Tama-Neko.)

However, Shouka had made a pact with a demon and was granted the power to bring people back to life with a kiss. Miaka hoped Shouka could bring the deceased Shichi Seishi, Tasuki, back to life, but Miaka fell ill. Shouka informed the other Shichi Seishi that the only way to save her was to kill Miaka and have Shouka bring her back to life. Not satisfied with this answer, Hotohori went to Mitsukake's home and begged for his help. He refuses them at first, but later joins the fight. After a battle with Shouka/demon, Mitsukake 'healed' her, banishing the demon, but leaving Shouka lifeless. He perseveres, and decides to join Miaka to summon Suzaku.

Mitsukake's power upgrade from Taiitsukun is a jar of 'spirit water'. This water comes in handy in Sailo, when Tasuki, Chichiri, Mitsukake, and Chiriko are trapped in the desert by Tomo's illusion. Once the illusion was broken, they were in pretty poor shape until they drank some of the spirit water.

In the war between Konan and Kutou, Mitsukake was blasted by Nakago's ki. His powers previously sealed by Seiryuu no Miko's wish, he was badly hurt. Despite his own injuries, he healed the people of Konan using skill alone. His energies depleted, Chichiri begged for him to stop, but then a young couple brought their infant daughter. Her name was Shouka, and Mitsukake used the last of his spirit water to heal her before passing away. When several guards start to scuffle in the street, an outraged Chichiri, maskless and with tears, demands them not to waste Mitsukake's gift of life.

In the 2nd part of the manga/2nd OAV series, Nuriko finds his spirit playing with a young girl named Shouka - the one Mitsukake gave the last of the spirit water to. Later, when Chichiri was unwilling to fight his friend, Hikou, Mitsukake tells him about his relationship to Shouka, and what happened during the flood that killed Hikou and Mitsukake's family. The story touches Chichiri and allows him to pull himself together and save Miaka. Mitsukake then gives Chichiri his spirit water in case the monk wanted to heal his eye.
